This is an awesome news! The Active Lives survey in England has revealed that 20% of all activities undertaken by adults are now cycling or walking, due to the rising cost of living crisis.
This is the largest increase in any activity in a given year and 3.2 million more people are now regularly using active travel than before. Chris Boardman, National Active Travel Commissioner, welcomed the results, noting the benefits to physical and mental health as well as the cost savings.
There have been calls for more consistent funding for cycling and walking, but the UK Government has instead slashed the active travel budget by two-thirds, leading to criticism from Sustrans and the Walking & Cycling Alliance.
