Pandora’s Cluster

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has revealed brand new details of the Pandora’s Cluster, a mega-cluster where three galaxy clusters are merging. Through the use of gravitational lensing, astronomers can use the cluster like a magnifying glass to view more distant objects behind it. The image contains around 50,000 sources of infrared light, including many faraway galaxies made visible by the lensing effect. The image shows layers of objects from a foreground star to magnified distant galaxies that have been distorted into arc-like forms. Follow-up observations will allow scientists to gain a peek into part of the early universe. The image is a testament to Webb’s versatility, proving its ability to gaze deep into space to see distant and faint celestial objects.
